More Than Stereo Out Possible?

Post by codycomposer »

Hi there,

We use Show Buddy to play our backing tracks and run our light show. Currently we're only able to run a mono signal to our mains because our drummer uses a click track and vocal cues, which occupy the left channel (right channel contains all backing tracks and goes to the mains).

I'd really love to be able to send a stereo signal to the mains and the click track to an "output 3"… is that possible in Show Buddy, or does it only have stereo out?

The official Show Buddy Setlist 1.8.1 release (and the latest 1.9.2 beta release) have a second stereo output for click tracks, in addition to the primary stereo output. You can grab the installers from www.dmxis.com/download

You will need to first activate a second stereo output in the Preferences > Audio/MIDI Devices.

Then, just load up a song from the Track Library, press the "Click track..." button and choose your secondary stereo track. I recommend you use exactly the same audio format and file length and the main stereo track, to guarantee perfect sync during playback.

That's great news, Dave!

As a follow up, how would you get both stereo outputs out of the computer? Something like a USB audio interface with 4 inputs/outputs?

Yes, exactly. Something like a Behringer UMC204HD or Focusrite Scarlett 4i4...

Hi there. I am following this thread and trying to implement the separate click-track facility. I am running into a Behringer X-Air XR18 desk, and my ShowBuddy Setlist preferences recognise it and automatically assign 9 pairs of mixer channels (e.g., 1&2, 3&4, etc.) via a single USB from my laptop.

Another USB from the laptop goes to the DMXIS box, which, in turn, feeds a simple lighting setup. (Two LED pars, one aimed at each member of our duo.)

While I have been using this setup for years, I hope to use the newer 'click track' functionality in ShowBuddy Setlist to stop DMXIS from registering audible 'clicks' in the tracks. This causes the lights to emphasise the beat of the music, which is generally ok, but sometimes the pulsating lights are inappropriate in a certain passage of the music. If I can separate the clicks from the front-of-house audio in terms of the feed to dmxis, this would overcome that dynamic.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Will I have to (be able to?) play two stereo MP3 files simultaneously? Any other guiding comments would help.

Kind regards

How do you activate a second Output?

  • Go to File > Preferences > Audio/MIDI Devices
  • Select two stereo output pairs in "Active Output Channels"
  • The main backing tracks will be routed to the first stereo pair.
  • The click tracks will be routed to the second stereo pair.
For example, in this screenshot, the main backing tracks will go to "Output 1+2" of the NDI Audio device, and the click tracks will go to "Output 3+4".

I have a scarlet solo. Is it not possible to send main track to Laptop headphones and the click track to the Scarlet Solo?

Or do I need a larger Scarlet with more outputs?
