Triggering Banks/Presets on APC Mini Buttons?

Post by Shockwave_Pro »

Hi all!

I just got my DMXIS, and know virtually nothing about MIDI programming or language. I thought the “MIDI learn” function would make it easy to map a MIDI controller like the APC mini that I purchased with it. But I’ve found that the “MIDI learn” function is not available for banks/presets...

I’d like to program each bank/preset to a button on the controller, so they can be easily accessed during a show. I run a mobile live sound reinforcement company, and I have no pre-programmed music to work from, so I’d like to create some general “looks” that would work for a variety of styles and genres. The 64-button interface of the APC mini was very attractive for that purpose.

I’ve read about Notes 0 and 1 and channels 15 and 16, but I’m very confused as to how to program all of that within the software...and how to subsequently map that to a button on the controller. I’ve even found a diagram of what notes (I guess) each button on the APC mini sends, but again, I’m confused. Please help!

Thanks in advance!

From what I can see this device is designed to control one or two particular pieces of software ... none of which are DMXIS. It looks like that not only is the interface it presents is not documented, but it is not reprogramable either. I think I found something where someone hooked it up to something like Bomes MIDI translator to puzzle out what it sent. That wasn't very encouraging either.

Long ago I, too, was looking for some sort of general purpose surface to use with DMXIS ... didn't find anything back then. But who knows? I'm not totally savvy in this industry.

The thing is, a simple keyboard might be far more useful ... If you can associate the various octaves with CH15 and CH16 individually. Or maybe there might be a channel switch button on one. Look into the mini Korg nano keyboard for starters (well, look into the documentation that is).

Better yet, one or two of the nanoPads. They provide an editor for programming both of these devices.

This controller can be used to control bank and program selection in DMXIS

Korg NanoPad2

You could also use something like TouchOSC on an iPAD to create a fully custom touch interface.

A Akai midimix.
A Peavey PC-1600
And a Behringet fcb1010

Hi Guys! Thanks for the replies. I talked to Steve at Bomes MIDI Translator Pro, and he actually wrote me a program that allows you to map the functions of the APC Mini button matrix to the bank/preset changes in DMXis. The first button in each row changes the bank, and the succeeding 7 buttons change presets within each bank. It works perfectly.

Yep, I have a program. Find me on the Bome Forum. You can also find my email address there.
