Live Performance Contingency

Post by ryguyb1993 »

I'm the drummer in a cover band. We use SBA with Ableton (triggering banks and presets) on a laptop to run our light show, and use Stage Traxx 3 on an iPad to run our backing tracks. We connect them using an XR-18 as a midi interface.

That said, in a 3-4 hour show there are bound to be mistakes, and we occasionally fall off the click. Right now, if that happens, I stop the backing tracks. I've programmed Stage Traxx to send a midi command to stop Ableton when I press stop, then it sends midi notes on channels 15 and 16 to send SBA to a general bank with a basic color fade preset.

My reason for writing this is to ask, what are other bands are doing when the band gets off click? Does anyone have some "best practices" for band running a light show without an LD?

Is there a way to run random presets or toggle auto play for when I trigger a stop or we have songs that I haven't programmed a show for?
